The skin provides a wide variety of chemical and physical conditions in which different microorganisms can grow selectively. This is one reason why preservatives, natural or synthetic, play a vital role in product formulation. Added to this is the potential of microbial contamination (bacteria, yeast or fungus) in cosmetics, toiletries and personal care products. This is known to be very common in products that are not properly preserved. Microbial contamination renders a product unfit and dangerous.
